Robert Long was the brother of Monica Dutton and the brother-in-law of Kayce Dutton.

He is an ex-Army veteran who is shown to be trigger happy. As John Dutton and the Montana Livestock Associate plotted to reclaim the cattle from the Reservation, he joined the Broken Rock Reservation police to hold off the Livestock agents and failed. Robert retaliated by shooting Lee Dutton in the neck. As a response, Kayce shot Robert in the torso and then shot him in the head.
