I heard a thousand stories but none could describe this place. It must be witnessed to be understood. And yet... I've seen it, and understand it even less than before I first cast eyes on this place.
Elsa Dutton

Elsa Dutton was a main character and the narrator in 1883: A Yellowstone Origin Story. She was the eldest daughter of James and Margaret Dutton.

Biography

Elsa was the eldest child of James and Margaret. Unlike the other women in her family, Elsa was a free spirited tomboy and fully embraces the freedom and possibilities of the West. She was known to wander and venture off, earning the ire of her Aunt Claire. She arrived with her family at Fort Worth, Texas from Tennessee shortly after her uncle died. She wasn't much for discipline so her Aunt Claire had to show Margaret how to properly punish her by slapping her to the point where Elsa broke into tears. During the journey north, she became acquainted with a cowboy named Ennis, who she began to admire. She grew fond of him and their romance bloomed until there was a shootout with some bandits, resulting in Ennis' death. She later met a Comanche warrior in Kansas named Sam who she connected with, giving her a second chance at love. She later agreed to accept Sam's hand in marriage, but there was no ceremony. She did carry on with the caravan with a promise to return back to Sam once her family settled.

In the prologue, she was bruised and injured as she woke up somewhere in the Rockies to Indians burning carriages and killing and scalping several immigrants. As she reached for a pistol on a dead immigrant, she was approached by an Indian with his bow aimed at her, telling her that he could either sell her or kill her. Elsa chose the latter and shot the warrior dead, but not before receiving an arrow through the torso. She then began walking toward the Indians and began shooting at them. It is unclear if this is the end for Elsa.
